The village establishment was assisted by the timely arrival of Mr. Trevor J White, [better known as Rev. Asang (“light” in the Dusun language)] from England, who brought with him sawmilling equipment and carpentry skills in addition to his overriding purpose of evangelizing the new settlers.
The Borneo Evangelical Mission (now Sidang Injil Borneo – SIB) was the platform used to promulgate the Christian religion amongst the settlers. In the earlier days the village life centers around the church and Christmas and Good Friday & Easter were prominent village events. Now the SIB church in Taginambur is a prominent landmark of the village, where apart from a place of worship, wedding ceremonies as well as last rites are also conducted in the church.

The Passing of a Great Missionary in Borneo
May 31, 2006 is the funeral of J Trevor White. He was the first and last frontier missionary of the Kadazan-Dusun community, the largest indigenous group in Sabah (North Borneo).
Trevor White’s story is amazing as if it was a dream. He came to North Borneo in 1939 as a young man from Draycott, Somerset, England. Trevor was incarcerated by the Japanese during the World War 2. After the war he went back to England and he returned to Borneo in 1946. Trevor started evangelizing the animists and idol-worshiping Dusuns in the interior of Borneo.

Trevor built a Christian community at Kg. Taginambur from scratch. They first worshipped in a church made from palm leaves before they built a wooden structure in 1956. In the meantime, Trevor and his few faithful deacons evangelized the Dusuns of Taginambur area and today (2006) almost everyone in Taginambur is a Christian.

Towards the end of Trevor’s burial service the sky opened up and it was soaking wet but away from Taginambur the sky was clear. Why rained in Taginambur at the very moment his casket was laid to rest? It was as if the heavens wept and reminded us that a giant of faith has now gone and we, Trevor’s children are left fatherless.
Asang’s prayers have sustained the church over the decades.
